Ship: Consciousness is not needed for intelligent behavior.
Ship: An immune system recognizes pathogens as separate from the host and symbiotic bacteria. It adapts and learns. It is an intelligent system. It is not a conscious system.
Work Leader: Kind of sad. It will never appreciate a concert, or a beautiful piece of engineering.
Ship: Would you rather the immune system appreciate a concert or protect the body? There are advantages to unconscious systems.
